NEW Planning Considerations for K-12 Rural Schools Train-the-Educator (TtE) Hybrid Training (View in Browser)
The REMS TA Center is excited to announce our NEW Planning Considerations for K-12 Rural Schools Train-the-Educator (TtE) Hybrid Training, available through the Live Trainings by Request (TBRs) and Virtual Trainings by Request (VTBRs) programs. This new synchronous training explores ways to use the six-step planning process to meet the unique challenges, strengths, and opportunities of emergency management planning in K-12 rural schools.
The REMS TA Center created this training as an extension of the Developing Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs) K-12 101 Training, and they are intended to be delivered together at the same site on the same day. The class size for the in-person training should be 25 attendees at a minimum and 100 attendees at a maximum. The class size for the virtual training should be 25 attendees at a minimum and 475 attendees at a maximum.
Training Objectives
During this course, you will
Increase your understanding of the common characteristics of rural schools and districts in the United States.
Explore challenges, strengths, and opportunities rural schools have that can impact school safety, security, and emergency management.
Examine the six-step planning process for developing high-quality EOPs, including special considerations for rural schools.
Identify no/low-cost and no/low-tech efforts, tools, and strategies that work together to reduce risk and improve safety across multiple threats and hazards.
By the end of this training, you will be equipped with strategies to develop partnerships, build capacity, and design customized and feasible emergency plans to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from critical incidents within your unique rural context.
Intended Audience
This training is intended for K-12 rural school communities, including district and school administrators; educators; staff; EOP planning team members; and all who play a role in school safety, security, and emergency preparedness. It is also applicable to rural community partners, such as fire officials, emergency medical services personnel, law enforcement and school resource officers, public health officials, and mental/behavioral health practitioners.
Apply to Request and Schedule This Training
Interested in hosting this training? Check our requirements below to review your agency’s eligibility:
Be a public or nonpublic K-12 school, school district, local education agency, regional education agency, state education agency, or partner with an education agency that will serve as the lead requester.

Public Schools Unite Us: Luke Zahm and Jenny Carr
We’re thrilled to premiere the 5th video in our Public Schools Unite Us series from Emmy-award-winning journalist Steve Betchkal and Micah Davis of Soul Shine Creative Studios. Reuniting public school alumni with the educators who influenced them, they profile a diverse range of individuals to explore the ways that public schools build and support strong communities. The latest installment features public school champion Luke Zahm – owner of the Driftless Cafe in Viroqua, host of Wisconsin Foodie, & celebrity Wisconsin chef featured on Top Chef: Wisconsin – and his 6th grade teacher, Jenny Carr. Jenny Carr is a lifelong educator, first as a public school teacher and then a public librarian. She is a strong believer in making information free and accessible to everyone.
