DESCRIPTION:
This session will share current trends in rural multilingual student enrollment, programming, and staffing in Wisconsin. The presenter will describe the research base surrounding effective rural multilingual education practices nationwide and then tighten the lens to Wisconsin’s context specifically. The session ends with an exploration of rural multilingual staffing challenges around programming and staffing and some recommendations to support rural EL teachers’ leadership and efficacy in their roles, contributing to higher retention rates for these positions.
PRESENTER: Kaycee Rogers, PhD Candidate at UW Madison, Program Coordinator-CESA 2
Kaycee grew up in rural Wisconsin and is a former public school EL, Spanish, and Elementary teacher. For the past 8 years, she has been an ESL teacher educator for undergraduate, graduate, and licensure-only programs. She is currently a program coordinator with CESA 2, specializing in language and elementary licensure in their post-baccalaureate teacher licensure program, CESA 2 Licensure Academy for School Staff (CLASS). She is also a PhD candidate studying rural multilingual teacher identity, agency, and positionality. She is working with rural EL educators across Wisconsin to support and amplify their voices in multilingual education.
